Title of Project: AUTONOMOUS GAS LEAK DETECTION & SHUT-OFF
SYSTEM FOR LIQUIFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG)
Project Adviser:
A. Rationale
Gas leak from LPG’s is one of the significant enemies of fire fighters as it causes
devastating fires. These fires can lead to extensive property damage, loss of life, and serious
injuries. The heat generated by an LPG fire is intense and can cause secondary fires in
nearby structures or vehicles and the toxic gases produced during combustion pose health
risks to anyone in the vicinity. In one report over 9,568 fires has been reported since the
start of 2024 in which 443 of these reported cases were from gas leaks and open flame
cooking (Cabrera, et al.,2024).
In the study by Salhi et al. (2019) explored machine learning techniques for early
detection of gas leaks in smart homes, demonstrating how advanced algorithms can
enhance the accuracy and reliability of detection systems. This study supports the notion
that integrating intelligent technologies into gas leak detection can lead to significant
improvements in safety outcomes
However, past studies about gas leak mitigation are mostly focused primarily on
technical implementations and detection systems which does not completely cut-off the gas
supply which is the one posing fire risks.
With this the researchers are looking for other alternative ways to modify the machine
for the early detection of gas leaks from petroleum gas as this doesn’t only pose risk on
people health but also damages structure and properties. Which has led to the idea of
making an autonomous gas leak detection and shut-off system for LPG Gasses with the
incorporation of Arduino uno. The machine won’t only detect gas leaks but after a few
seconds after detection the machine automatically cuts the gas supply. The construction of
this machine will be beneficial to the community especially that almost more than 40% of
the Filipino’s uses LPG for cooking.
B. Research Problem
Gas Detection and Shut-Off System using Arduino Uno, as the main problem of the
occurrence The researchers will aim to prevent the effects of gas leaks using the
Autonomous of gas leaks are housefires. The researchers will aim to ensure the safety of
citizens that rely on LPG gas in order to mitigate the chance of housefires and gas leaks
as a whole.
C. Expected Outcomes
This study aimed to answer the following questions regarding autonomous gas leak
detection and shut-off system for liquified petroleum gas:
1.Will the machine be able to detect gas leaks in terms of:
i. Accuracy
ii. Distance
iii. Reaction Time?
2.Will the machine be able to shut-off the gas supply after detection?
Research Methods
In this study the Descriptive experimental design, was implemented by the researchers
in determining the capabilities of the autonomous gas leak detection and shut-off system
for Liquified petroleum gas. This method best suites the study as this research design
answers the question: Is the machine effective in detecting and closing gas leaks in terms
of accuracy, distance, and response time? And will the machine be able to shut-off the gas
supply after detection
Research Instrument
The research instrument to be used is an observation sheet. An observation
sheet is used in order to observe the machine’s capability to detect and close gas
leaks. It will also give us data that we could use to compare from data used in
traditional methods of detection

• List of materials
The materials that will be used to conduct this study are Arduino kit to connect the
different components, MQ-2 gas sensor, a Solenoid valve, Distance sensor, 12 volts Dc
battery, 5V relay module, and lastly, a Back converter. These components will be connected
to each other to make an autonomous shut-off system for LPG using Arduino Uno.
• Procedures
Research Methods: Procedure, Instruments
A. Gathering and Collection of materials
The researcher will start by collecting and preparing the materials such as Arduino
kit, MQ-2 sensor, Solenoid valve, Distance sensor, 12 volts Dc battery, 5V relay module,
and Back converter.
B. Construction of the Machine
After collecting all the components that are needed the researchers will proceed to
the construction of the machine. The researcher will make a code for the Arduino uno and
connect the components together.
C. Professional Consultation.
After putting together, the machine the researcher will consult professionals such
as Electricians, and Fire Fighters, to make sure that the machine will function property and
won’t cause any harm to anyone.
D. Machine Testing
After constructing the machine and making sure that the machine works perfectly
the researcher will proceed in the machine testing. The machine will be tested in terms of
its ability to detect gas leaks form the gas source, it’s time to respond, and its accuracy.
E. Data Gathering and Analysis
Lastly, while the testing is happening the researchers will gather data and use the
observation sheet to tally the data gathered.
Risk & Safety
During the testing for the study if the machine failed to cut-off the gas supply there
is a possibility that the researchers will be exposed to LPG gas which may impose some
health problem to the researchers. As a precautionary measure the researchers and anyone
who is present at the testing must wear a gas mask to prevent possible health problems
imposed by the exposure by gas leaks.
