MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (MSIT)- TACOMA
AUTUMN 2025
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
With an unwavering passion for technology and its remarkable capacity to solve complex, real-
world problems, I am excited to pursue the Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT)
program at the University of Washington Tacoma. My fascination with IT first sparked during
my undergraduate studies and has been further ignited by my diverse professional experiences
and personal growth. The MSIT program at UW Tacoma presents the ideal opportunity for me to
sharpen my expertise in this ever-evolving field, while equipping me to make a lasting, positive
impact on both my community and family
I am particularly drawn to the Master of Science in Information Technology program because of
its strong reputation for delivering a well-rounded curriculum that combines technical knowledge
with practical application. The opportunity to develop advanced skills in key areas such as data
analytics, cybersecurity, and IT management is especially appealing, as these disciplines are vital
in navigating the constantly evolving technology landscape. My professional experiences in IT
have reinforced the importance of not only mastering technical skills but also applying them
effectively to develop meaningful solutions. I have learned that technical expertise alone is
insufficient, success in this field also demands the ability to grasp real-world problems and apply
knowledge to create practical, impactful solutions. The program’s emphasis on hands-on, real-
world projects aligns perfectly with my career goals, as it provides a valuable opportunity to
bridge the gap between theory and practice. I am excited by the prospect of applying what I learn
in the classroom to real challenges, allowing me to develop a deeper understanding of the field
and make a more significant impact in my career and community.
Looking ahead, my goal is to advance my career in IT by taking on roles that involve both
technical development and strategic decision-making. I am particularly interested in positions
such as IT Manager, Web developer, Data Analyst, or Solutions Architect, where I can leverage
my skills to drive innovation and improve business processes. In the long term, I aspire to
assume leadership roles in the tech industry, guiding technology initiatives and mentoring the
next generation of IT professionals. My ultimate goal is to use my expertise to develop solutions
that promote financial inclusion and literacy, especially for underprivileged communities.
With my educational background in Information and Communication Technology and hands-on
experience through internships, I bring a unique blend of technical expertise and a strategic
approach to the MSIT program. One of the highlights of my internship at the ICT Authority was
when I was involved in a large-scale government project aimed at modernizing public service
delivery through ICT. The project faced several challenges, including ensuring secure and
seamless integration across various departments. I was tasked with assisting in the development
and implementation of critical ICT systems, focusing on network security and system
optimization. Using tools like network management software and systems analysis techniques, I
collaborated closely with senior IT professionals and government stakeholders to ensure the
successful deployment of the systems. We identified key areas of improvement in the existing
infrastructure, which led to enhanced efficiency and security across the public service network.
In the classroom, I can share this experience to emphasize the practical impact of IT in
government operations and public service. This real-world insight serves as a valuable example
of how strategic IT implementation can drive meaningful improvements in organizational
processes. Moreover, I thrive in collaborative environments and have experience working on
cross-functional teams. I am eager to engage with my peers in group projects, sharing my IT
knowledge while learning from others with diverse technical backgrounds.
Beyond my professional experience, I have also volunteered with the Unbound Project, where I
contributed to community service initiatives as a scholar. In this role, I mentored younger
scholars, organized educational workshops, and led community outreach programs. My
involvement in these activities deepened my understanding of how technology can be a powerful
tool for social change. Whether it was using digital platforms to enhance learning or leveraging
IT solutions to improve outreach efforts, these experiences solidified my commitment to
applying my knowledge of technology in ways that positively impact society.
The MSIT program at the University of Washington Tacoma will play a pivotal role in helping
me achieve these goals. The program’s focus on blending technical knowledge with practical
application aligns with my desire to use technology to solve real-life challenges. I am particularly
excited about the capstone project, which will allow me to apply my learning to a real-world
problem and showcase my ability to develop innovative solutions which can enable me to find
employment in companies like Microsoft, X, Google and also locally here in Kenya.
Additionally, the university’s strong connections to the tech industry in Seattle provide unique
opportunities for networking and professional growth, which will be invaluable as I work toward
my career objectives.
I am truly enthusiastic about the opportunity to join the MSIT program at UW Tacoma and to
immerse myself in its vibrant academic community. With my strong passion for harnessing the
power of technology to drive positive change, along with the skills and experiences I’ve gained, I
am confident that I will thrive in this program and make a meaningful impact. I eagerly anticipate
collaborating with fellow students, exchanging ideas, and learning from the distinguished faculty
at UW Tacoma.
Thank you for considering my application. I am eager to embark on this new chapter, where I can
further explore the transformative potential of technology and contribute to shaping a brighter
future.
