# **Force – Class Notes**
## **Definition of Force**
Force is a push or pull acting upon an object that can change its state of motion or shape. It is a
vector quantity, meaning it has both **magnitude** and **direction**.
## **Effects of Force**
A force can:
1. Change the speed of an object (accelerate or decelerate).
2. Change the direction of motion of an object.
3. Change the shape or size of an object.
4. Bring a moving object to rest or set a stationary object in motion.
## **Types of Force**
### **1. Contact Forces** (Require physical contact)
- **Muscular Force** – Applied by muscles (e.g., lifting a book).
- **Frictional Force** – Opposes motion between surfaces in contact.
- **Normal Force** – Perpendicular force exerted by a surface on an object resting on it.
- **Tension Force** – Force in a stretched string, rope, or cable.
### **2. Non-Contact Forces** (Act at a distance)
- **Gravitational Force** – Attraction between objects due to their masses (e.g., Earth's gravity).
- **Electrostatic Force** – Force between electrically charged objects.
- **Magnetic Force** – Force exerted by magnets on magnetic materials.
## **Newton’s Laws of Motion**
### **1st Law (Law of Inertia)**
An object remains at rest or in uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force.
### **2nd Law (Force and Acceleration)**
The force acting on an object is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by its acceleration:
\[
F = ma
\]
Where:
- \( F \) = Force (Newton, N)
- \( m \) = Mass (kg)
- \( a \) = Acceleration (m/s²)
### **3rd Law (Action and Reaction)**
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
## **Units of Force**
- SI Unit: Newton (N)
- 1 Newton = Force required to accelerate a 1 kg mass by 1 m/s²
## **Balanced and Unbalanced Forces**
- **Balanced Forces** – Do not cause motion (net force = 0).
- **Unbalanced Forces** – Cause motion (net force ≠ 0).
## **Friction**
- A force that opposes relative motion between two surfaces.
- Can be reduced using lubricants, streamlining, or smooth surfaces.
