TUTORIAL SESSION

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS PAPER


This paper contains four sections: Section A, Section B, Section C and section D. All these sections are
compulsory.

SECTION A: DATA MODELLING (20 marks)


A private university is interested in designing a database that will track its teachers, students and courses.
Information of interest includes teacher‘s names, matricule, telephone, gender, grade, student names,
student telephone, student matricule, student gender, student address, student age, course title, course
code, course ID and course credit. Each student enrolls in one or many courses of his choice and a teacher
is teaching one or many courses. When a student enrolls to a course at the end, he had a mark.
1. What is an E-R Diagram? List all the components of an E-R diagram (5 marks)
2. Using the appropriate software install on computer Draw the equivalent E-R diagram of that
private University (8 marks)
3. Convert the diagram to a relational model (7 marks)
SECTION B: DATABASE DEVELOPMENT (20 marks)
A business company in Cameroon is having the following tables on their database:

1. What is E-R diagram? List its components (4 marks)


2. Draw the equivalent E-R of that company (4 marks)
3. Using the appropriate software answer the following questions: (12 marks)

Task 1: Create the database of the company entitled “COMP”


Task 2: Create the tables “Worker” and “Bonus” including all their columns
Task 3: Insert all Data’s found on “Worker” and “Bonus” tables
Task 4: Create a SQL query to fetch “FIRST_NAME”, “DEPARTMENT”, “BONUS_AMOUNT of
the workers who have bonus

SECTION C: OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING (JAVA OR VISUAL BASIC) (40 marks)


A- During practical in class the teacher draw the following figure:

Using your problem solving skill and visual studio, create a project having 2 forms, the first one that
will control the login and the password (login should be HND2022 and the password ISM2022) that if
ok will lead to the second form which is FormComputation

The form 1 is having 2 labels (LOGIN and PASSWORD), 2 TextBox (login, pass), 2 buttons
(SIGN IN and RESET). The button SIGN IN should display appropriate message (wrong login
credential or successful login) and the RESET button should set the 2 TexBox (login, pass) to
empty data.

Note: The forms should be at the centre of the screen and the password content should not be visible.
The form 1 should be hidden when FormComputation is active

B- During the course of rapid application development, the teacher asked you to used your problem
solving skill and visual studio, to create a project having 2 forms, the first one that will control the login
and the password (login should be HND2023 and the password ISM2023) that if ok will lead to the
second form which is FormComputation

The form 2 is calculating and displaying the final GPA of a student on the following subject : Case study
(14 credits), practice of computer (10 credits), Law (2 credits), entrepreneurship(3 credits), Math (4
credits)

SECTION D: SYSTEM MAINTENANCE (20 marks)

A- The University of Section A have received 10 desktop computers and they don’t have information
on each of the computer. They want you to open the System unit and give all the information of
each computer.
1- Dismount the system unit of each computer received by the university and list all the components
inside and their properties.
2- Mount now the computer and turn it on screenshot the characteristics and save in a file called
MaintenanceISM.docx to show the details of the computers and save in a folder ISM created up

B- Instructions: Answer all parts of this section by describing the practical steps you would take to
perform the following tasks. Be specific and detail the procedures involved.

Question 1: Hardware Maintenance (8 Marks)

(a) System Care (2 Marks) i. Describe the practical steps you would take to perform routine physical
cleaning of a desktop computer, including both internal and external components. (2 Marks)

(b) Hardware Installation (4 Marks) i. Detail the step-by-step procedure you would follow to
physically install a new internal SATA Hard Disk Drive (HDD) into an empty drive bay of a desktop
computer. Include safety precautions. (2 Marks) ii. Describe the practical steps involved in changing an
ink cartridge in a typical inkjet printer. (2 Marks)

(c) Peripheral Installation (2 Marks) i. Outline the practical steps you would take to connect and install
a new USB printer on a computer running a common desktop operating system (e.g., Windows or
macOS) for the first time. (2 Marks)

Question 2: Software Maintenance (6 Marks)

(a) Operating System Installation (3 Marks) i. Describe the practical steps you would take to prepare a
bootable USB drive for installing a common desktop operating system (e.g., Windows or a Linux
distribution). (1.5 Marks) ii. Outline the practical steps you would follow to perform a clean installation
of the operating system from the prepared USB drive onto a computer. (1.5 Marks)

(b) Application Software Installation (3 Marks) i. Detail the practical steps involved in installing
Microsoft Office suite on a computer after you have obtained the installation files or are using an online
installer. (2 Marks) ii. Describe the process you would follow to activate the installed Microsoft Office
suite. (1 Mark)

Question 3: Finding Faults and Upgrading (6 Marks)

(a) Finding Faults (4 Marks) i. Describe the practical steps you would take to diagnose a computer that
powers on but shows no display on the monitor. Consider both hardware and basic software possibilities.
(2 Marks) ii. Outline the practical steps you would take to troubleshoot a software application that
consistently crashes upon opening. (2 Marks)

(b) Upgrading Software (2 Marks) i. Describe the practical steps you would take to check for and install
available updates for a common web browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox). (1 Mark) ii. Detail the practical
steps you would take to perform a major version upgrade of a desktop operating system (e.g., upgrading
from one major version of Windows to the next). Include important pre-upgrade considerations. (1 Mark)
