Motion Class9 Notes

Motion is defined as a change in the position of a body with respect to time, with key concepts including distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration. Various types of motion include translatory, rotational, and oscillatory, with uniform and non-uniform motion distinguished by equal or unequal distances over time. The chapter also covers equations of motion, graphical representation, and practical examples in daily life.

Chapter: Motion (Class 9 Science) - Full Long Notes

1. What is Motion?

Motion is a change in the position of a body with respect to time.

- Rest: Object does not change position.

- Motion: Object changes position.

2. Types of Motion

- Translatory, Rotational, Oscillatory, Periodic

- Rectilinear and Curvilinear

3. Distance and Displacement

- Distance: Total path (scalar)

- Displacement: Shortest path (vector)

4. Uniform and Non-Uniform Motion

- Uniform: Equal distances in equal time

- Non-Uniform: Unequal distances in equal time

5. Speed and Velocity

- Speed = Distance / Time

- Velocity = Displacement / Time

- Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time

- Average Velocity = Total Displacement / Total Time

6. Acceleration

- a = (v - u) / t
- Positive: Increasing speed

- Negative: Retardation

7. Equations of Motion

1. v = u + at

2. s = ut + 1/2 at²

3. v² = u² + 2as

8. Graphical Representation

- Distance-Time: Straight (uniform), Curved (non-uniform)

- Velocity-Time: Area under graph = displacement

9. Uniform Circular Motion

- Speed = 2pir / T

- Centripetal acceleration is present

10. Key Concepts

| Term | Type | SI Unit |

|--------------|---------|---------|

| Distance | Scalar | m |

| Displacement | Vector | m |

| Speed | Scalar | m/s |

| Velocity | Vector | m/s |

| Acceleration | Vector | m/s² |

11. Examples

1. Speed = 100 km / 2 hr = 50 km/h

2. a = (20 - 0) / 4 = 5 m/s²

3. s = 0 + 1/2 × 2 × 25 = 25 m

12. Daily Life Examples

- Train in uniform motion

- Ball thrown upward

- Fan blades

13. Recap

- Motion and rest are relative.

- Scalar: Magnitude only

- Vector: Magnitude + Direction
