Employment Law Assignment 1 June 22, 2016 June 22, 2016 Employment Law: Assignment 1:
Question 1: (A)(i) Maternity Leave Employee s that become pregnant, are entitled to take maternity
leave. This entitlement, extends to all female employees, regardless of how long they ve worked in
the organisation, or number of hours worked each week. It is possible to avail of further unpaid
maternity leave. The Maternity Protection Act 1994, provides statutory minimum entitlements in
relation to maternity at work, including maternity leave. Pregnant female employees, are entitled to

Question 2: (i) Part time Work The Protection of Employees (Part Time Work) Act 2001, is the
legislation that protects part time employees in Ireland. This act protects part time workers,
because of the following: 1, Part time employees cannot be treated less favourably than a
comparable full time employee regarding conditions of employment 2, All employee protection
legislation applies to a part time employee in the same manner as it already applies to a full time
employee. Any qualifying conditions that apply to a full time employee in any of that legislation
also apply to a part time employee. 3, This Act abolishes the requirement that a part time worker
should be in the continuous hourly employment of the employer for not less than 13 weeks and
should normally be expected to work not less than 8 hours per week. The calculation of continuous
service for the purposes of entitlement under the unfair dismissals and redundancy legislation still
applies. Therefore, a part time employee will still be required to have 12 months continuous service
with their employer from the start of the employee s employment. (ii) Fixed term work The Terms
of Employment (Information) Act 1994 requires that employees with a fixed term contract get
written notice of the expiry date. The Protection of Employees (Fixed Term Work) Act 2003 applies
to most employees on fixed term contracts. Employees on fixed term contracts have broadly similar
rights to those on
Danny Archer s Blood Diamond
In the beginning of Blood Diamond, the protagonist, Danny Archer, a white South African
diamond smuggler, is a man who cares only for himself. This personality trait makes sense because
he has unfortunately been alone for the majority of his life. His mother and father were both
violently killed when Danny was just nine years old. From then on, he had to learn how to survive
on his own, without anyone to support him, and with that he developed selfish characteristics. When
he was a young adult, he fought in the war, which did not help with his selfishness. This most likely
made it worse because hypothetically people that he got close to were killed in battle. As an adult
he lives a life smuggling diamonds to make money for himself, even though... Show more content on

Solomon becomes determined that he cannot lose his son, so he does everything he can to find him
on the path to the diamond. Solomon opens up to Danny and tells him that his son loves to learn
and will one day become a doctor. Danny tells Maddy, You know Solomon thinks his son will be a
doctor someday? Maybe his baby dies in that camp, maybe his daughter gets raped. Who knows,
maybe both. Do you realize that that diamond is his only chance of getting his family out of here.
Danny realizes how much Solomon needs to find his family, and it is his first time understanding
this because he never had a family for himself. Danny s objective shifts little by little and he
becomes increasingly protective of Solomon because he wants him to find his son. Throughout
their mission to find the diamond, Danny watches Solomon risk his life everyday just to see his
son, and risk his life to save other people, like the little boy who is injured on the side of the road
due to a shooting. Danny s complete change of heart comes from watching Solomon reunite with his
family, and seeing how determined Solomon is to get his son back from the R.U.F, and becoming

Outline for All the Disappearing Islands

A. Paragraph 1: Introduction
Julia Whitty writes about the amazing beauty of Tuvalu Islands

B. Paragraphs 2 3: General Idea

The general idea is the environmental and cultural impact of melting ice caps on the nation of Tuvalu.
Global Warming could cause the sea to expand and rise faster than the corals could fortify
themselves against it and Tuvalu could disappear beneath the waves.
This not only risks the population of the island but also to the unique human culture born and bred in
this watery island.

C. Paragraphs 4 6: Tuvalu s traits This is a waterfront property, and no one has ever lived a moment

Warming oceans might trigger an eruption of methane now frozen beneath the sea floor, leading to
global warming on a catastrophic scale. Big nations like Australia and the US who are responsible
for most of the world s pollution chose to ignore this evidence.
Tuvaluans see the evidence with their own eyes every day.
Only 75 islanders a year will be accepted as refugees by New Zeland.

H. Paragraphs 26 36: Tuvalu s perspective on the future.

Even after all the evidence Funafuti seems to be building like a nation with a long term future.
New houses are springing up and the nation prosperity is growing.
Tuvaluans are very religious.
Most of Tuvalu s landmass is composed of the bones of its people

I. Paragraphs 37 40: Tuvalu s population and culture.

Many young Tuvaluans are being sent away for school.
Recent population estimates indicate that in the last two years some 2,000 have fled the rising waters.
Tuvalu has managed the resources well growing the national fund o $30 million.

J. Paragraphs 41 45: The world s response toward global warming.

The government is seeking allies among other island nations for a lawsuit against the United States
and Australia to be brought in front of the International Court of Justice.
Many other islands like Kiribati and Trinidad are have similar issues.
Eventually the cost will be high for all nations.

The Importance Of Purpose In Life
In order to answer the question how to find your path in life , first of all I d like to clarify that
finding your path in life is different AND MORE IMPORTANT than finding your purpose in
life... When people talk or explore finding their purpose in life a lot of them have ideas on their
purpose, but they don t know where to start. Or a lot of other people make passion lists, do s and
dont s list but they still are not able to find their purpose. Or people question themselves is this what
I am supposed to be doing ?
And then once you want to take action to find your purpose in life, another big challenge that most
people have when making changes in life is fear . For example fear of making the wrong choice,
fear of not being good ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Which group do you belong to?
Here are 12 strategies that can help you answer the question how to find your path in life
1. There is always uncertainty... so learn to be comfortable with it. There is no right or wrong
choice, there is only a choice... so make the choice you believe will lead you to your life path. How?
Use your intuition and gut feeling.
2. Patience, you can NOT speed up your finding your path and your purpose in life... you can only
cultivate your purpose which is like you give water to a flower. So focus on your path and overtime
your purpose will reveal itself. TIP: use your Monk Intuition when you make decisions
3. Combine your passions, one of my friends is 7 times Canadian Kayaking Champion, Executive
Coach, Speaking Coach and developed a painting technique as an artist called Painting Without a
Brush ... she doesn t chose one purpose, she s simply on her path in life and her purposes will
evolve overtime
4. Connect the dots on your life journey to see your path more clearly

The Causes And Impacts Of Hurricane Katrina
In the year of 2005 one tragic event had happened to the Gulf Coast of the United States. On August
29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina, a Category 3 storm made landfall, and affected hundreds of thousands
of people from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama. These people were evacuated from their homes,
and authority estimates that this hurricane generated more than $100 billion in damages. This
hurricane was able to maintain winds up to 100 to 140 miles per hour and was 400 miles across.
Hurricane Katrinastarted to develop over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005, so meteorologist were
able to notify people in the states of the Gulf Coast that a massive storms was about to hit. New
Orleans was a major city that was going to get struck. Nearly 80 percent of New Orleans was
flooded with water. Hurricane Katrina killed almost 2,000 people and impacted 90,000 square miles
of the United States.

The Olympic Games Of The Games
The Olympic games originated in Athens in 776 B.C. The more popular modern day Olympic
games began nearly 2300 years later in 1896. The games no longer represented a religious festival,
but a sports competition instead. The games can be studied via multiple aspects such as political,
social, and economic, but this paper will concentrate on the economic aspect of the games and
more specifically, the macroeconomic impacts the games possess. It is evident that hosting the
Olympics games is no walk in the park. The countries trusted with this task have to spend billions to
make the games a reality. Some people believe that the countries, even after spending billions of
dollars benefit from the games, while others believe that the money can be spent elsewhere more
efficiently. To reach a conclusion, one must study all of the different impacts in all of the different
sectors the games have.
London was not the only option when it came to the 2012 summer Olympics. France was also in the
running and was actually pretty close to getting the gig. London won the bidding race with 54 50
votes from the International Olympic Committee. The need of some economic spark for London s
economy may have been the reason why the vote went their way. London s economy had been
stuck in a recession for almost a nine month period. The question was: Are the Olympics going to
provide a positive benefit for London s economy?
Employment
Preparing for the Olympics takes a lot of time, effort and money.
Advantages And Disadvantages Of Biomass
In order to answer this question I have to carry out an experiment. This experiment will be
compared with past studies of the conversion of biomass to biofuel.

Biomass is a term defined as plant based material. Biomass energy is derived from five energy
sources: garbage, wood, waste, landfill gases, and alcohol fuels. Forest residues such as dead
trees, branches and tree stumps, yard clippings, wood chips and garbage are often used. It can be
used for energy production through combustion or direct burning. Raw plant and tree materials can
also be refined in order to create what are called biofuels. One example of a potential biofuel would
be wood. Wood contains a lot of potential energy but in order to create the biofuel wood energy is
derived both from the direct use of harvested wood as a fuel and from wood waste streams. The
largest source of energy from wood is pulping liquor, a waste product from the industrial processes
of the pulp, paper and paperboard industry.

Industrial scale biomass production is now readily being grown after an increased popularity for
biofuels. Biomass is now being grown from numerous types of plants sources, including sugarcane,
grasses, switchgrass, hemp, corn, pine, bluegum, poplar, willow, and sorghum. There is little
difference in the source that the energy is extracted from.

Biomass is a foundation which can be converted to energy (biofuel), it is potentially able to power
everything from cars to airplanes. Biomass can be converted to
What I Learned About Myself By Prentice Hall Self- Assessment
As we learned from Project 1 employee personalities have a dynamic effect on an organization s
culture, thus supporting the idea that organizational culture has a significant impact on employee
performance. In today s business world more and more organizations are seeking ways to
incorporate self appraisal and personality assessments into their hiring decisions. Robbins and Judge
s chapter on personality and values highlights how tools such as the Myers Briggs type indicatorand
the Big Five Personality Model are helping employers to determine if an employee s personality
will fit into their organizational culture (2009). Assessments on employee behavior supply
employers with a broader perspective on how the employee views their performance as well as
provide insight on employee values. Self assessment provides formative and summative feedback
which employers may use to identify an employee s strengths and weakness. From this they are
able to assign tasks that will best support an employee s workplace performance. This paper will
discuss what I learned about myself by Prentice Hall Self Assessment. Good but should be in the

The Jewish Wars
Title
King Solomon in the Proverbs declares that For though the righteous fall seven times, they always
get back up. (New International Version, Prov. 24:16). The time of 66 to 73 AD was an era of
turmoil throughout the Roman Empire. Many strains of beliefs and philosophies were being formed,
widely spread, and persecuted, like that of the early Christians. Yet, at the same time, the ancient
religion of the Jews was also a grand source of persecution that is often neglected to be taught. The
Jewish Wars that were fought during this time resulted in a horrific amount of deaths and feuds, the
destruction of the Temple, as well as the disappearance and shifting of various sects. But, it also
resulted in the unification and collaboration of various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The amount of deaths that occurred during the Jewish Wars are staggering; these tragedies can only
be preceded by the Holocaust. Because of the impact of the first Jewish War and Bar Kokhba, the
population decreased from from 7 to 8 million before the revolt to under 2 million by the 3rd
century C.E. While some of this spiral may have been caused by a falling birthrate, much was due to
conversion to Christianity, assimilation, and abandonment of Judaism. (25). If the war of Masada had
not occurred, and not such an astonishing amount of people had died, Judaism instead of
Christianity might have emerged as the main religion of the Roman Empire. (27). Also, the
persecution thoroughly tested the strength of the Jew s beliefs. Hadrian, a fickle leader,
illegalized circumcision. This was a paramount part of the law of the Jews, and so it was a strike
at the very heart of Jewish identity and religion. (29). There is a countless plethora of examples of
harsh edicts that rulers would put into place against the Jews. But, their responses often involved
revolts, which in turn led to the unification of believers. When there is a common, malicious enemy
in sight, the will to fight leads to a prevailing allegiance to one s faith. This made them stronger and
more rebellious, which is most likely why the Jewish religion is still prevalent in our society, and
why the nation of Israel was reinstated in
The Pros And Cons Of Nonbal Communication
NON VERBAL
Non verbal communication is an essential form of expression; it can support a verbal context or
merely be the only method of relying on an idea or thought. Interpersonal and Group Dynamic
textbook states non verbal communication is the primary way we communicate feelings, attitudes
and emotions (p.159). This manifestation can be transmitted through body language, facial
expression to murmuring, thus understanding this form of communication is crucial since it can
open or close a dialogue. Whereas, someone who is non expressive, or has closed body language,
it can be interpreted to be arrogant or not willing to exchange in a conversation. In this section of
the course, I came to realize my non verbal communication style is both negative and positive. The
negative aspect is my body being restless or closed while distracted by other ... Show more content

This bridging makes it accessible to learn about other cultural communication techniques;
consequently, in this exchange, we should consider different languages, beliefs, cultural upbringing
to effect communication and interpretation. We cannot assume that if we speak English to someone
in which English is not their first language that they would have a clear understanding of certain
words, phrases and perhaps even local slang. We can use the same words, but our interpretation is
subject to our level of comprehension. What we need to consider when speaking to people of
different cultural backgrounds is to remove ourselves away from that perception about the recipient
having the same English knowledge as myself. We should consider the possibility of breaking down
our explanation in more straightforward terms, ask the other person for clarification, if necessary
have an interpreter, use non verbal signs, study ahead of time about the different culture

Two Kinds Conflict
In two kinds we find ourselves being the audience to a mother daughter conflict. It is a conflict of
cultural differences, pain, disappointments. A story of a mother who puts all of her hopes and
dreams on to her daughter, wanting nothing more then for her to become a prodigy, live the life she
(or her two deceased twins) never could.
Jing mei is the protagonist in the short story Two Kinds . We are confronted with a young girl who
herself does not believe she has the talent or the looks to become a start. Initially she is beyond
eager to please her mother, make her mothers wishes for her come true. She wants nothing more
then to make her parents proud. She knows her parent s approval lies in her becoming a prodigy.
Yet as time passes we are confronted with a Jing mei that slowly looses hope, the hope of ever
fulfilling her mother s dreams, for no matter how much effort Mrs. Woo puts in to molding her in
to a child prodigy, Jing mei simply does not have the needed talent, or drive. Up until now she is a
very consistent character, we expect her to always follow her mother s lead, without rebellion, yet

One can almost get a sense of her soul crumbling with each test she fails. Jung mei reaches a point
of utter darkness, not knowing who she is, or how she could ever be worth anything. Yet it is in this
moment that we see the biggest change in her character, it is the constant failure that ultimately
drives her to rebel, become the strong prodigy her mother wanted her to be. She is a very round
character, and undergoes many developments throughout her childhood, all the way in to adulthood.
In her rebellion against her mother lies her strength. She spends many years purposely rebelling
against her mother, it almost seems as if it has become her personal mission to not excel at life, just

My Cultural Identity Essay
My Cultural Identity Good times in your culture makes good memories . Good memories can
connect to your culture even if it s good or bad. Your culture can have many different things about
it . There s different kinds of cultures. Some people are dedicated to their culture. People do things
in their culture many different ways and some people do things the same way if they have the
same culture. My cultural identity is interesting because of all the memories, food, and a specific

great memories today with friends and family. Another connection to my culture is me and my
friends having good times together. Finally, this is important to me because there was
unforgettable memories and life lessons being made. One of the life lessons I learned was life is
too short to not enjoy it I was just thinking at the time to enjoy my life and I did enjoy my life in a
way by being with my friends and having fun playing games, hanging out, and me being happy.
The games me and my friends would play were twister, basketball playing with a frisbee, and
kickball. My old neighborhood park is a important part of my cultural identity. Lasagna represents
my culture and me. The lasagna has flat strips of layers with ground beef inside it with mozzarella
