The Worst Hard Time Summary
The Worst Hard Time Egan, Timothy The Worst Hard Time was published by Houghton Mifflin
Company in the U.S. Copyright Timothy Egan in 2006. The Worst Hard Time takes place during
the Great Depression of the U.S. in the 20 s and 30 s. It tells the story of several different people
and groups of people during this tough time in American history, at times comparing it to before
and after the time frame of the Depression. I chose this book because it shows the story of people
not only facing the economic decline, but also have been betrayed by the Earth itself in the form
of dusters . Not only are people suffering from poverty, an entirely new problem is introduced
when people get dust pneumonia from the dusters. This book takes place primarily in the South
and West coasts of the United States (as well as central U.S.), but also includes a few excerpts
from people who had lived in New York as well as several other places affected by the economic
downfall. The story doesn t primarily look at one person s time in the Great Depression. Rather, it
looks at different people, switching around and getting a taste of each group s individual journey.
Whether that be a long trek across several... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe these contribute to the reader s understanding of the conditions that people were living
in at the time and it s very easy to compare their lives and ours. For example, on page 36, there is a
photo of a family alongside their house. The photo is relevant to the topic of discussion in that
chapter and can give a visual to the conditions of each average household during America s Great
Depression. From this photo alone, without much of any context, you could analyze that the average
household for a family is one to two rooms, and money is scarce even among the wealthy.
Personally, I think the visuals are useful for further understanding the story and gaining an image of
what the average life was
The Irish Potato Famine
Research Paper: Irish Potato Famine
Beginning in 1845 and lasting for six years, the potato famine killed over a million men, women and
children in Ireland and caused another million to flee the country (The History Place Introduction).
During the 1840s many Irish citizens lived in poverty. For food, the Irish relied almost entirely on
potatoes because of their low cost and nutritional value. Then a devastating potato blight began in
Europe in 1845 and destroyed the crops every year until 1851. Due to Ireland s poor government the
citizens we not able to recover from the famine quickly.
Before the famine in the mid 1800s, many English politicians and social reformers began to think
that Ireland was a nation in need of transformation, that it s people now needed to be yanked into
the modern world by tossing out the old Gaelic traditions (The History Place Before the Famine).
The English reformers wanted to end Ireland s cycle of poverty and misfortune because in the
1800s poverty was thought to be caused by bad moral character (The History Place Before the
Famine). The English politicians and social reformers also wanted to change the laid back
lifestyle of the Irish peasants. They professed the virtues of hard work, thrift and self reliance and
regarded the Irish as totally lacking in these qualities, a point of view also shared by many British
officials and politicians (The History Place Before the Famine).
Ireland s population doubled to over 8 million
Fallibilism and the Justified Deduction Principle
Information is one of the concepts that may be measured, evaluated, stored, and shared, but does this
have the same connotation as knowledge. Even though these two notions are used interchangeably in
most cases, it is difficult to see the difference without having sufficient ground for this. How can one
state that justified true beliefis knowledge? This problem was deeply examined by a German
philosopher Edmund Gettier who explained the difference and provided significant evidence for
questioning everything, as Descartes did. Explanations by Gettier are intricate and more related to
the true or false correlation between something that a person believes to be the true and something
that prevents him or her to think so.
Edmund Gettier took the topic of justification and knowledge to the next level with his
philosophical Gettier s Problem. The Gettier Problem s counterexamples is dependent on two
principles, Fallibilism and the Justified Deduction Principle. The principle of Fallibilism is based
off the belief that a person has the potential to be justified in believing a false statement while the
Justified Deduction Principle entails that if a person has evidence to back up a certain claim, that
person is justified to trust that claim. As these two principles highlight the Gettier Problem, it
becomes clear that Edmund Gettier opposes the Justified True Belief as knowledge concept.
The only thing remains clear is when one person has some justified evidence for believing in
Curley s Wifes Loneliness
John Steinbeck highlights the theme of loneliness in his novel Of Mice and Men to show that
many individuals who were discriminated against were lonely; Curley s wife is lonely because
she is a woman, Crooks is lonely because he is African American, and migrant workers are lonely
because they have no one who cares about them. To begin, Curley s wife was often lonely because
she was a woman. In the great depression, women were not valued and were not as important as
men were. They would often be looked down upon, and the men often acted as if they owned
their wives, such as when Curley treats his wife poorly. This caused her to be lonely because she
had no one to talk to. To show this in the book, Curley s wife says, I never get to talk to
The Main Role As Part Of The Constitution
Despite the fact that definition and nature of conventions is uncertain it is obvious that they have a
significant role as part of UK constitution. To understand how conventions are sufficient as a sources
of the constitution it is necessary to discuss their nature first, then continue with analysis on how
they operate from a wider prospective and finally, emphasize their strengths and weaknesses.
Constitutional convention is an informal agreement which is not signed or codified by any
authority and that is agreed upon and followed by many organizations. Likewise, conventions are
considered to be changing gradually as time goes by but sometimes they are developed instantly.
The example of long run convention may be that relating to individual ministerial responsibility
which changed its scope as government developed. In contrast, convention stating that the money
bill passed by the Commons is not likely to be canceled by Lords was controversy and short run.
Constitutional conventions come up when there is a freedom to exercise a certain power that is not
denied by the law. This arouses opposition which excludes possibility to have unlimited freedom on
future grounds in certain matters. As a prove, in the UK there is a constitutional convention that the
PM cannot stay in office when he does not have majority votes in the House of Commons
originated from an attempt to the PM to rule without a majority votes support from the House in the
year of 1834. This was met by a great

For example, he gave his student a hint, emphasis their request, in the most natural atmosphere, in
which the teacher and student open their hearts and communicate with each other In other words,
Confucius illustrate the way to care for others: he embraces his student through a friendly dialogue
and interaction with them. In early childhood education, when the teacher have good relationship
with the child the child can more easily to followed the teacher and more likely to learn. His was
also used asked and answer teaching model as a teaching method. He was good at asking questions

Patricia Is Researching Venues For A Restaurant Business
Patricia is researching venues for a restaurant business. She is evaluating three major attributes that
she considers important in her choice: taste, location, and price. The value she places on each
attribute, however, differs according to what type of restaurant she is going to start. If she opens a
restaurant in a suburban area of Los Angeles, then taste is the most important attribute, three times as
important as location, and two times as important as price. If she opens a restaurant in the Los
Angeles metropolitan area, then location becomes three times as important as taste and two times as
important as price. She is considering two venues, respectively, a steak restaurant and a pizza
restaurant, both of which are priced the same.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3.Which option should she pursue if the probability of finding a restaurant venue in a suburban
area can be reliably estimated as 0.7 and in a metropolitan area as 0.3? Describe your reasoning and
show your calculations. Suburban area: steak restaurant utility= 0.7*0.0477=0.03339 Pizza
restaurant utility=0.7*0.0467=0.03269 Metropolitan area: steak restaurant
utility=0.3*0.0477=0.01431 Pizza restaurant utility=0.3*0.0467=0.01401 Starting a pizza
restaurant in the suburban area is more favorable. This is because it has the highest utility
compared to all the other options. 4.Provide a description of a scenario in which this kind of
decision between two choices, based on weighing their underlying attributes, applies in the real
world business setting. Furthermore, what are the benefits and drawbacks, if any, to this method of
decision making? Such a scenario may happen when one wants to start a retail business but where
the market is high; the business is likely to be affected by adverse weather conditions whereas the
best place to locate the business has least market though the price of the commodity in question is
constant. The benefit of this may be choosing a way of attracting more market such as offering
discounts at a particular quantity bought. There may be also a drawback as the discounts may not
automatically attract customers hence leading to a loss. Problem 2: The demand function for

The Basketball Court
What Happened On the Basketball Court The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer
somebody else up. This quote is written by Mark Twain, an American writer, entrepreneur,
publisher, and lecturer. This quote is telling us that if you make someone feel good you will too.
This quote is a great example of what happened to me in 2nd grade. This quote a great example of
what changed my life and is now what I do everyday. It was January 8, 2012. I was In my house
playing on the computer and my mom was on the phone with my dad saying Should I tell them
now, or when you get home. I could not hear my dad. My mom said, Ok, ok, I understand. She
hung up the phone and then said, Boys come here for a second. We all sprinted with a smile
stretching across our faces thinking she had good news. I put my hands out as I tri on my
brothers shoe and fell over and caught my fall. It felt like minutes until I finally got there with the
biggest smile I have ever made I my life. Then my mom sighed, Boys I have some news. Right as
she said that my smile slowly started to vanish. Then the worst possible thing at that moment
happened. My mom said, We re moving. It was Monday January 14, 2012. My two brothers and I
were being guided to our classes. As the bell rang I leaped witch felt like I was 5ft high. My palms
were sweaty as can be. I was so nervous that I forgot how to walk. But, again I was only In 2nd
grade. We finally got too my class. Everyone was whispering to each other.
The Simplicity of Solipsism Essay
In life, there s much that seems confusing. We always want simple explanations for everything, but
there are some theories that simply don t possess an easy way of putting it. Many of these theories
are used in literature; examples include nihilism, existentialism, and monism. However, there s one
theory that s particularly interesting: solipsism. Solipsism is the belief that nothing exists, or can be
proven to exist, except one s own mindand the creations of it (Glossary). Solipsism is a very old,
and often misunderstood, theory. Although it s used in literature, in books such as Grendel by
John Gardner, solipsism also occurs in everyday life. However, it s not always easy to find. If we
wish to do so, we must to take time to ponder.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather, the solipsist can attach no meaning to the supposition that there could be thoughts,
experiences, and emotions other than his own (Thornton). This states that a solipsist doesn t
necessarily believe only he or she exists, although it s possible. More precisely, the person is able
to acknowledge that others thoughts, emotions, etc. may exist, however he or she can t find real
proof that anyone but him or herself subsists. Concisely, a true solipsist comprehends, for example,
the word pain as my pain. The person cannot perceive how this word is to be applied in any sense
other than this exclusively egocentric one (Thornton). Although there has yet to be a person who has
considered him or herself a solipsist, there is a type of person who could be thought of as one: a child.
Children below age six perceive the world differently than we do. The infant sees the world as
populated by objects which come in and out of view, [...] therefore, [...] in and out of existence.
Epistemically the infant s world is utterly solipsistic (Flanagan 144). When we think about it, this
makes sense. A child doesn t care about something unless it s in his or her sight, since it s all that
the child knows to exist at that moment. Everything in the child s universe is whatever he or she
perceives it as in any given instant. For example, a child will not search for a treasured rattle
