DESIGN OF DOG-LEGGED STAIRCASE

AS PER IS 456: 2000

1. Data
Floor height = 3.2 m
Height for one flight = 1.6 m
Riser height = 150 mm
Tread width = 250 mm
Effective span = 3.51 m
No. of riser in each flight = 11
No. of tread in each flight = 10

fck = 20 N/mm2
fy = 500 N/mm2

2. Calculation
Assume overall depth of waist slab = D = 127 mm
Clear cover = 20 mm
Diameter of main reinforcement = 12 mm
Effective depth of waist slab = 101 mm

DL of waist slab = 3.175 kN/m2

DL on horizontal area = 3.703 kN/m2
DL of steps = 1.875 kN/m2
2
LL = 3 kN/m
Floor finish = 1 kN/m2
2
Total load = w = 9.578 kN/m
Factored load = wu = 14.366 kN/m2

3. Depth of waist slab

Factored BM = Mu = wu L2/8 = 22.06 kNm
2
Mu = 0.138 fck b d
Therefore,

Mu
d=
0.138 fck b
= 89 mm OK
\D = 127 mm
d= 101 mm

4. Reinforcement
Mu = 0.87 fy Ast d (1 - Ast fy / bdfck) (Clause G-1.1 of IS 456-2000)
Substituting the values we get,
10.875 L 12 -43935 L1 + 22064091 = 0
Solving we get,
Ast = 588 mm2
Hence provide 12 mm diameter bars @ 150 mm c/c
2
Ast = 754 mm OK

Distribution reinforcement
2
Ast = 0.12% of cross-sectional area = 152.4 mm
Hence provide 10 mm diameter bars @ 150 mm c/c
2
Ast = 524 mm OK

5. Check for shear

Factored shear force = Vu = wuL/2 = 25.1787
Nominal shear stress = tv = VU/bd = 0.25 N/mm2
k= 1.30 for D = 127 mm (Clause 40.2.1.1 of IS 456-2000)
tc = 0.559 N/mm 2
for pt = 100Ast/bd = 0.747 (Table 19 of IS 456-2000)
Permissible shear stress = k tc = 0.73 N/mm2 > tv SAFE

6. Development length
Desigh bond stress = tbd = 1.92 for M20 (Clause 26.2.1.1 of IS 456-2000)
Stress in bar = ss = 0.87 fy = 435 N/mm2
f ss 5220
Ld = =
4 tbd 7.68
= 680 mm
DESIGN OF SLAB

Material :
2
Concrete Grade (fck) = 20 N/mm
2
Reinforcement Steel Grade (fy) 500 N/mm

Dimensions:
Short Span = Lx = 3.43 m
Long Span = Ly = 4.11 m

Effective Cover = 15 mm

Boundary Condition = 3 One Long edge discontinuous

(Critical support conditions)

Load :
Floor Finish Load &
2.5 kN/m2
Partion Wall Load wf=

Live Load wL = 3 kN/m2

Load Factor: 1.5

2. Calculation
Aspect ratio = Ly/Lx = 1.20
Slab designed as: Two Way Slab

Bending Moment Coefficients: (Table 26 of IS 456-2000)

ax support = 0.0519 For short span support moment.
ax span = 0.0389 For short span span moment.
ay support = 0.037 For Long span support moment.
ay span = 0.028 For Long span span moment.

Assumed overall depth D = 127 mm OK

Effective depth d = D - Eff. Cover = 112 mm
Selfweight wself = 25 x D/1000 = 3.175 kN/m2 ( Density of concrete assumed 25 kN/m 3)
Total load = w = wself+wf+wL = 8.675 kN/m2
Factored load = wu = 1.5 x w = 13.013 kN/m2
Factored Bending Moments = Coefficient x wu x Lx2
3. Reinforcement
Mu = 0.87 fy Ast d (1 - Ast fy / bdfck) (Clause G-1.1 of IS 456-2000)
Ast req (mm2/ m)

Mux span= 5.954 kN m 125.75
Muy support= 5.664 kN m 119.45
Muy span= 4.287 kN m 89.78

Minimum Ast req = 0.12% of 1000 x D = 152.4 mm2 per meter

Reinforcement Provided:
Short Span Support: 10 Dia at 150 c/c Ast= 523.3 OK
Short Span Span: 10 Dia at 150 c/c Ast= 523.3 OK
Long Span Support: 10 Dia at 150 c/c Ast= 523.3 OK
Long Span Span: 10 Dia at 150 c/c Ast= 523.3 OK

Basic L/d = 26 (Clause 23.2.1 of IS 456-2000)
Modification factor = 2.00 (Figure 4 of IS 456-2000)
d req as per deflection control= Lx / (Basic L/d x Modification factor)= 65.96 mm
d required < d provided so, OK

5. Check for Shear:

Nominal Shear Stress (tv) = Vu/ bd= 0.199 N/mm2
k= 1.30 for D = 127 mm (Clause 40.2.1.1 of IS 456-2000)
tc = 0.464 N/mm 2
for pt = 100Ast/bd = 0.467 (Table 19 of IS 456-2000)
Permissible shear stress = k tc = 0.604 N/mm 2
