Introduction Manufacturing
Manufacturing Technology

• Manufacturing is the process of turning raw materials or parts into finished goods using tools,
machinery, labour, and chemical or biological processing.
• Manufacturing technology provides the tools that enable to production of all manufactured goods. It
converts raw materials into affordable, quality and useful products.
• Enables a growing, stable economy while rising the standard of living.
• The manufacturing process really represents adding value to a raw material and creation of wealth.

Course Handout

• Scope of class lectures

This scope of the course is to provide an exposure to the basic manufacturing processes and their
applications to produce different kinds of manufactured goods. The casting and machining processes are to
be covered in detail while the discussion on forming and joining processes is going to be introductory while
its detailed treatment is left to the next level course. The objective is to develop a sense of comparison for
choosing appropriate manufacturing process to meet the requirements and also to make the student
competent to establish appropriate process parameters for different processes.

• Scope of laboratory sessions

The course has structured lab exercises for imparting hands-on experience on different basic
manufacturing and allied processes. Exercises on testing of foundry sand, welding and machining have
been particularly incorporated.

Foundry Practices
• The process which uses liquid
metals and moulds to create the
finished products.
• Oldest known manufacturing
process.
• Preparation of cavity known as
mould.
• Using cavity to pour molten metal
to create a finished part.
• Part is removed from the mould
after solidification.

Forming
• The forming process is a
group of manufacturing
techniques that reshape a
material without adding or
removing material.
• The process uses external
compressive forces or
stresses to deform the
material, which is based on
the principle of plastic
deformation.
• Extrusion rolling forging
