What Are Executive Functions

Executive functions are high-level cognitive processes crucial for planning, attention, and task management, primarily governed by the prefrontal cortex. They encompass core functions like working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control, as well as higher-order functions such as emotional regulation and self-monitoring. These functions are vital for success in education, the workplace, and social interactions, and can be supported through various strategies and interventions.

How to Support
Students with Weak
Executive Functions

• Use visual aids: Checklists, planners, and

and task initiation.
• Break tasks into steps: Provide step-by-
step instructions and help students break
large tasks into smaller, manageable parts.
• Provide structure and routines: A

• Teach self-regulation strategies:
Mindfulness, deep breathing, and reflection
exercises can help with emotional control.
• Encourage self-monitoring: Help students
assess their progress and adjust their
approach as needed.
