I'm migrating all my personal bookkeeping from #LibreOffice to #Lotus123 running on DOS/8086. Why? Because I can. It's great nostalgia, and also a good test case for my 8086 emulator, and I can also utilize my old PCs when in the mood.
As a bonus #DOS is also much faster: on 3.2GHz Pentium, LibreOffice startup takes over 20 seconds; my 8086 emulator, DOS and 123 start under 5 seconds. And I can run it in a terminal under #GNU screen.

In the late 1980s, Radio Belgrade 202 was sending software over radio for download.
Back in the 80s, devices such as C64, the ZX Spectrum, and the Yugoslav self-built Galaksija were using cassette tapes for storing data and programs.
In Yugoslavia, there was a radio program that would play such a cassette on air, people would record it at home with a cassette, and then they would have a new game or other program that they could load into their computer.
that's an excellent idea and IMO every single software project - especially FOSS ones - should do this.
on mobile OS platforms, it has to be the same.

New rule: if a device needs an "app" for some functionality to work, treat that device as not having that functionality at all.
Here, Logitech mice have lost basic functionality - like some of the buttons, you know, doing anything, or scrolling not working - because of an expired certificate for the app.

At any time, any particular app could stop working due to technological changes, vendor support, OS support, or any of a hundred other reasons, and if functionality depends on that app, you're high-and-dry. Found this program by a Blind developer. Flux. Has an interface for Audio Vault too, but I mainly use the accessible internet radio because it presents a desktop interface to all these web services and that's something I love! Ainda que haja fartura de registros de pluralização pela adição de S em material lusófono, resisto e faço o convite para isto: dar preferência ao plural de palavras perfeitamente cabíveis da nossa própria língua, tais como programas, sistemas, aplicações.
Para usar o termo original em alguns casos em que realmente pode expressar melhor algo mais genérico, proponho preservar sua ideia abstrata e, se plural, fazê-lo como complemento, evitando a distorção: projetos, conjuntos, pacotes, trabalhos etc. de software.
Isso pode ser considerado um preciosismo exagerado, perfeccionismo, como muito do que acabo me envolvendo. Contudo, gosto demais de tentar aprimorar aquilo que consigo, pessoal ou coletivamente. Não é a intenção censurar quem não adere à ideia. E, claro, crítica também é bem-vinda, quando construtiva. ✌️

"Politics" isn't only about institutions. It's about organizing large numbers of people to do something they wouldn't otherwise do. Corporations organize large numbers of people to do things they probably wouldn't do if they weren't paid and/or didn't need the money to live. 10,000 people wouldn't spontaneously get together and spend the best hours of their days for months building a commercial jet airliner if there weren't corporate structures in place and a society that keeps them close enough to deprivation that they will do this in exchange for money.

Yesterday I found CodeFloe: A public Forgejo (Git server) instance that is open to any projects and users.
Unlike Codeberg, it is not limited to Open Source licensed projects.
If you were thinking "Codeberg is nice, but what about my personal closed-source projects?" - this might be a solution for you!
The instance is hosted in Germany by "devYX GmbH", a swiss company. They're doing backups and are carefully designing their infrastructure. And they're very open about how it all works and what software they use. 👏

I've been thinking about this for some years. As others have noted, the problem is that the market is accustomed to browsers being "free", ever since #Microsoft illegally leveraged their OS #monopoly to destroy #Netscape by driving their income to (essentially) zero.
I started thinking about it in terms of how I support various creators for small amounts with monthly #subscriptions. Could you fund reasonable #maintenance and #development of #Firefox purely based on low-cost subs from users? Bigger donations from companies or billionaires would be welcome, but it would need to be sustainable on its own first.
Development wouldn't have to be as expensive as what #Mozilla does (which is mostly counter-productive anyway...).
There are still millions of people - more than a hundred million, apparently - who use Firefox, and many of those are more knowledgeable about and involved with open-source #software. They're more likely to appreciate that funding development is the key to keeping Firefox relevant, and keeping the "AI" / #LLM / #advertising / #surveillance out of the #browser.
Some people are starting to pay a few bucks a month just for a search engine subscription. Why not pay for your browser? For many people, it's the software they use more than everything else put together. For some people, it's the only software they ever use.
I'd pay $2 a month to support my browser, if it kept it safe from <handwave> all that </handwave>.

A small reminder that keeping software updated is important for security and fixing bugs.
If you have very busy schedule, you can consider automating updates (it's actually quite easy), including server software updates, or hire a reliable company to take care of your server.

Minor vent about #FOSS usability...
Some FOSS #software is pretty darned good in some or most respects, but then you run into a sharp edge or missing battery that makes you #facepalm.
The #GIMP, besides the #problematic name, has one such. It is widely lauded for its abilities when #printing images. I don't print much in the way of photography or fine art, so it's not something I personally notice, but a lot of people swear by it.
However, if you search the web for "how to print a large #image over multiple #pages", you will find that the only way to do it is to cut the image up into separate, smaller images, and then each chunk can be printed to a page. You have to basically do this by hand (there's a function that can chop an image into pieces according to your settings, but that's it as far as automation goes), and if you want to fit the resulting pages together, you've got to make sure you preserve the DPI across multiple images, and ensure there's no overlap or missing bits, etc.
There are a *ton* of results for people looking for how to accomplish this, and all the replies are "You can't, do it by hand". Considering how trivial the necessary operations are for a computer, it's a #bizarre #omission.
