Statement of Purpose

Nine years back, in the year 2003, when I started my first job as an Executive in the Human
Resource department of a medium size organization, I did not know that this is where my
interest and passion lies. After doing my graduation in Commerce, I pursued my post-graduation
in Computers and Management where Personnel Management was one of the electives I had
taken. The reason was that it sounded fancy to me compared to other subjects. That course
gave me a basic understanding of what Human Resource function is all about.

After I started working I realized that Human Resource is not all about recruiting people and
paying them salaries. Now, after spending more than nine years working in the Human Resource
department of various reputed organizations and at different levels, I realise how interesting
people management is. I got the opportunity to work on various interesting topics like
compensation design, developing and implementing policies and processes, planning and
monitoring performance management, recruitment and selection, employee career
development and handling various employee issues. Though I have successfully met the
expectations from my role, and cherished being a Human Resource professional, I have always
felt that a specialized course with a meaningful insight and in-depth knowledge of various areas
in Human Resources will give me an upper hand in my career.

Right from my childhood and then in school and college, I have always shown the leadership
qualities. I have always loved to take higher responsibility and to drive various tasks as a team
member and independently. This trait has helped me alot in climbing the corporate ladder and
holding a managerial position within four years after I started my career. In the last nine years, I
have executed many projects and delivered the tasks given to me beyond expectations. I have
successfully managed people and their expectations across all the levels in the organization, and
helped them design their career graph. I always love to mentor people and help them grow
professionally and personally along with the organization they work for.

My interest in Human Resource management centres on the fact that the last few years of my
job involved extensive communication with people from different background and culture. I
have liked the interaction with them on various issues, and have worked as a mediator and
solved their problems, whether it relates to hiring and recruiting or dealing with their superiors.
Apart from that, I oversee the business of managing people in an organization.

My long term desire is to coach and mentor people wherever I can and at the same time excel in
the key areas in HRM. There is a huge gap in the demand and supply of specialist HR
professionals in the modern corporate world. HR professionals are becoming a part of business
strategy and acting like a change agent in the fast paced and dynamic global companies. This is
the reason I plan to do my PHd / research in the area of Human Resource. Some of my research
interests include organizational culture building, evolving trends in HRM and diversity
management in global organizations. I believe that I have the right kind of experience to start
the research. But before I start working on the proposal, it is extremely imperative that I get the
essential knowledge on the different areas in Human Resource Management.

I wish to be a global HR professional and I am confident that a Master degree in Human

Resource from the University of Melbourne will definitely be able to channelize my drive to
achieve the objective I have set for myself. This will not be possible if I do a similar course in my
home country. I have chosen Australia because it provides the multicultural environment, higher
quality of education and excellent infrastructure for living. And, I have chosen this course
because it seems tailored to my competencies. This course will give me the required knowledge
which will blend well with the rich corporate experience I have. The course will also benefit me
further to choose the area of interest to select the topic for my research.

With my experience I understand that HR today is no more a department which takes care of
the operational issues of the organization, or just focuses on recruitment. Today, HR is the
business partner in true sense, which can help the company to grow in the right direction. With
this program I want to gain in-depth knowledge of Human Resource Management, which in turn
will help my career to take-off in a new direction. This generalist program in Human Resources
Management, with special focus on changing needs of today’s global organizations is one of the
best programs that suits my skills, aptitude and career aspirations.

I wish you consider me for this program, because this is a mix of right curriculum and rich
coursework which will allow me to strengthen my knowledge and understanding of complex
human resource matters in the organization. I am a team player with proven leadership
qualities, and I am confident that right kind of coaching through this program can help me
become a great professional in the discipline of human capital management. I am a quick
learner who can handle rigors of academic studies. As a Human Resource manager, I have
handled wide variety of high responsibilities in my job and this is the area where my passion lies.
I am confident that this program will further enhance my knowledge, abilities and competencies
as a global professional.

This program is the perfect fit for my past experience and my future career objectives which will
help me speed up my growth into the top league. Though I am taking up studies again after a
long term corporate stint, I have never been out of touch of the core subject. I am determined
for everything I do and if I am selected I will make sure that I succeed and have an objective to
take the classroom learning beyond the college boundaries. I am confident that with my
devotion and dedication, I will be able to accomplish that goal and more in my career.
