The Respiratory System

Lesson 1

Respiratory System

The Human Respiratory System is a series of oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide

Parts of the Respiratory System

Nose
-a structure that sticks out from the middle of your face, is the entrance to your respiratory system.
Nasal Cavity
-warms and moisten incoming air so it doesn’t dry out sensitive lung cells that has to remain wet
Mouth
-brings air into the lungs. Since the mouth is larger than the nose, it brings in more air. And because
the air doesn't have to travel as far, the body can use it faster. But unlike the nose, the mouth doesn't
have a filtration system.
Pharynx
-passageway that leads from the oral and nasal cavity for the esophagus and larynx
Larynx
-commonly called the voice box, is an organ in the top of the neck involved in breathing, producing
sounds and protecting the trachea against food aspirations.
Trachea
-a long U shaped tube that connects your larynx to your lungs. It is often called the windpipe. It is the
key part of Respiratory System
Bronchi
-carry air to and from the lungs. The bronchi also helps moisturize the air and screen out foreign
particles. The airways are lined with cells that create mucus.
Lungs
-act as the functional unit of the respiration system by passing oxygen into the body and carbon
dioxide out of the body
Bronchioles
- the smallest air passages inside the lungs
Alveoli
- Tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchioles (tiny branches of air tubes in the lungs
Diaphragm
-muscles that sits under the lung to help you breathe
Functions of Respiratory System

Gas Exchange
-oxygen and carbon dioxide
Breathing
-movement of air

Sound Production
Olfactory Assistance
-sense of smell
Protection
-protection from the dust and microbes entering our body through mucus
production, cilia and coughing

Circulatory System
Lesson 2

Circulatory System

Is a network consisting of blood, blood vessels and the heart. This network supplies
the tissues in our body with oxygen and other nutrients, transports hormones, and
removes unnecessary waste products. It is also defined as the cardiovascular system.
Cardio means heart and vascular means blood vessels.

Parts Definition
Heart A muscular organ that pumps blood
throughout your body

Blood Vessels Which includes your arteries, veins,

and capillaries

Blood Made up of red and white blood cells,

plasma and platelets
