CEE 5470 Design for Seismic Loads

Homework 7 – Reinforced Concrete Moment Frames

Due October 24, 2023 at midnight

Given Information:

• Moment frame locations given in the plan below. Use dimensions between gridlines and story
heights from the structural drawings posted on Canvas for Homework 4.
• Lateral forces from ELF for the E-W direction are: F2=124 kips, F3=267 kips, F4=429 kips, F5=470
kips, FPHroof=201 kips. These forces include the redundancy factor as applicable.
• From a rigid diaphragm analysis, the force in the most heavily loaded moment frame is 0.36Fi
for the typical floor. At the penthouse roof, the lateral force to this moment frame is 0.50Fi.
• The vertical loading for the moment frame beams is D=3.2 k/ft (includes self-weight) and L=4.6
k/ft. Assume this is the same for the beams at every level including the roof.

Tasks for Homework 7:

1. Design and detail the beam identified on the previous page

a. Calculate the moments, shear and axial force in the beam using the appropriate load
combinations. A Mastan model is provided on Canvas for LC6 and LC7. For each of the
load combinations, show a figure of the beam with labels that give moment, shear and
axial force at the member ends. Identify the location and magnitude of maximum
positive moment if it is not at the member ends. It is ok to assume that the moment
diagram reverses when the lateral load direction reverses.
b. Design the longitudinal steel for this beam
i. Determine the number and size of bars to use for positive and negative
reinforcement in the beam.
ii. Prove conformance with the typical requirements of ACI Chapter 21 / 22, and
also the requirements of Section 18.6.3.1
iii. Include the effective slab width per section 6.3.2.1
iv. Show that beam strength conforms to section 18.6.3.2.
v. See point 4.b below. This may limit the size of longitudinal reinforcement.
c. Determine the configuration, bar size, and spacing for the seismic hoops for this beam
i. Draw the beam elevation (similar to what is shown on page 35 of the notes) and
label all the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement spacing.
ii. Draw cross-sections of the beam at the plastic hinge and away from the plastic
hinge. Label the bar sizes (longitudinal and transverse).
iii. Prove that your design conforms to all the requirements of section 18.6.4.
d. Check beam shear for this beam
i. Clearly calculate Mpr and Vu
ii. Calculate shear capacity. Prove whether you have to use Vc=0 or not.
iii. Check whether shear demand is less than shear capacity. If it is not, redesign
the transverse reinforcement.
2. Design and detail the column identified on the drawing
a. Use the strong-column-weak-beam check to calculate moment demand
b. Determine the number and size of longitudinal bars to use in the column
c. Draw an elevation view and a cross-section view of the column similar in concept to
what is shown on page 41 of the notes, but label all bar sizes, seismic hoop spacing, and
dimensions.
d. Prove that your design conforms to all the applicable requirements in Section 18.7.5.
e. Check column shear.
3. Check joint shear and joint detailing for the joint identified on the drawing
a. Check joint shear
b. Prove that the column width is wide enough to develop the beam longitudinal
reinforcement (see section 18.8.2.3). This may control the bar diameter, so check this
early.
