INTRODUCTION TO TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING-II

Ø Definition of transportation.
Transportation is the movement of people, goods, and services from one location to another using various modes such as
road, rail, air, or water.

Ø Definition of transportation system.

The transportation system consists of fixed facilities (roads), flow entitles (Vehicles), and control systems (lighting,
marking, signals, signs, etc.) that permit people and goods to overcome the function of geographical space efficiently to
participate in time in desired activities.

A robust transportation system is crucial for the economic prosperity of a nation, as blood circulation through arteries is
essential to the well-being of the human body.

Ø Components of transportation system

Five major components-
ü Vehicles: Car, Aircrafts, etc.
ü Motive power: Electricity, gasoline, etc.
ü Roadways / Surface of transport: Road, rail, river.
ü Terminals.
ü Control systems: Signals, Sign & marking, parking.
INTRODUCTION TO TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING-II

ü Concrete roads
ü Composite pavement roads
ü Gravel roads
ü Earthen roads
ROADS VS PAVEMENTS

vs
Road Pavement

q A road is a general term for a pathway or route q A pavement is the engineered, layered
designed for the movement of vehicles, pedestrians structure of the road that directly supports
or even animals. It includes the entire structure, vehicle loads. It typically includes:
such as:
q Surface course, Base course, Sub-base, Subgrade
q Pavement, Shoulders, Medians, Sidewalks,
Drainage systems, Subgrade layers q There are two main types:
• Flexible pavement (asphalt-based)
q It is the complete infrastructure built to support • Rigid pavement (concrete-based)
transportation.
In short: All pavements are part of roads, but not all parts of a road are pavement.
TYPES OF PAVEMENTS .

q Function of Pavement:
One of the primary function of pavement is load distribution. It can be characterized by tire load, tire configurations,
repetition of loads and distribution of traffic across the pavement and vehicle speed.

q Depending on some significant variation including the way of load distribution, pavements are majorly divided into to
categories.

Flexible Rigid

TYPES OF PAVEMENTS .

q Basic properties of Flexible and Rigid Pavements

Property Flexible Pavement Rigid Pavement

Surface Material Bituminous/Asphalt Cement Concrete
Layered system (load distributed Slab action (load spread over wide
Load Distribution
gradually) area)
Flexibility Flexible, conforms to subgrade Rigid, resists deformation
Initial Construction Cost Lower Higher
Maintenance Cost Higher (frequent) Lower (less frequent, more durable)
Temperature Susceptibility Affected significantly Less affected
Expansion Joints Not required Required to control cracking

Better? Flexible? Rigid?
