Class 9 Science - Chapter 7: Motion

Chapter 7: Motion (Class 9 Science)

Simple explanation with key concepts, formulas, and exam-focused details.

1 What is motion?
Motion is a change in the position of an object over time, based on a reference point.

2 Distance and Displacement

- Distance: Total path covered (scalar)
- Displacement: Shortest path from initial to final point (vector)
Distance Displacement
Displacement can be 0 even if distance 0
Formula: Displacement = Final position - Initial position

3 Speed and Velocity

- Speed = distance / time (scalar)
- Velocity = displacement / time (vector)
- Average speed = total distance / total time
- Average velocity = displacement / total time

4 Acceleration
Acceleration = (v - u) / t
where:
u = initial velocity
v = final velocity
t = time
Positive a = acceleration
Negative a = deceleration

5 Equations of Motion (Uniform Acceleration)

v = u + at
s = ut + at
v = u + 2as
Where:
Class 9 Science - Chapter 7: Motion

s = displacement, t = time

6 Graphical Representation
- Distance-time graph: Straight line = uniform motion, Curve = non-uniform
- Velocity-time graph: Horizontal = uniform velocity
Slope = acceleration, Area under graph = displacement

7 Uniform Circular Motion

- Speed is constant but direction changes
- Formula: v = 2r / t
r = radius, t = time for one round

Example Questions
1. Acceleration: (15 - 5) / 5 = 2 m/s
2. Distance: s = 0 + 3 4 = 24 m
3. Circular motion: v = (2 42250) / 24 11050 km/h

Important Terms
- Uniform motion: Equal distances in equal times
- Non-uniform motion: Unequal distances
- Odometer = distance, Speedometer = speed

Tips for Formula Questions

- Convert units to SI (m, s)
- Identify u, v, a, t, s
- Use proper formulas
