Romance Romance Essay
Romance begins with an attraction between two people and grows into an emotional attachment
called love. Affection, acts of kindness, words of affirmation, quality time, and sacrifice all
exemplify ways to show love. According to Webster s, romance defines as a love story especially
in the form of a novel. Novels enable readers to dive into a romantic story and experience the love
shared between two people. According to a study from BookStats, The estimated total sales value of
romancenovels in 2013 was $1.08 billion (qtd. in Romance Statistics ). Romance novels still require
a high demand with their multitude of sub genres. More specifically, paranormal, historical, and
contemporary romance entice people to read romance novels.... Show more content on

Pride and Prejudice, a novel written by Jane Austen, characterizes as a historical romance. The
story takes place in 1813 and displays the emotional development of the protagonist, Elizabeth
Bennet, who overcomes her hasty judgement of Mr. Darcy and falls in love with him (Austen).
The novel exhibits the necessity of marrying for love, rather than financial reasons. In the early
19th century, men and women faced the social pressures of a good, wealthy match. In fact, the
first line of the novel writes: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession
of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife (Austen). Published nearly two hundred years ago,
Pride and Prejudice continues to fascinate the minds of modern readers. According to Megan
Bruening, a Ph.D. English Student at Lehigh University, Pride and Prejudice appears near the top
of many lists for most loved books , from both literary scholars and the general public (Bruening).
History holds the intent to inform others of events from the past, but when romance associates with
history, it becomes much more; it gives a clearer vision of the reality in history. Contemporary
romance prevails as the largest genre of romance. Jessica Lind, an American librarian, claims
contemporary romance takes place in the time frame of its writing and focuses primarily on the
romantic relationship (Lind). The Handmaid s Tale, a novel written by Margaret Atwood, follows
the journey of Offred, a handmaid kept for
Pascal s Triangle And The Triangle
Pascal s Triangle is named after the seventeenth century mathematician and philosopher, Blaise
Pascal. However, several other mathematicians knew about and utilized the triangle before Pascal s
birth in 1623. In the twelfth century, both Persian and Chinese mathematicians were trying to create
an arithmetical triangle that is easy to construct and that gives the coefficients of the expansion of
the algebraic expression expression (a + b)n for different integer values of n. Pascal s Triangle was
first discovered by Chinese mathematician, Yang Hui, and rediscovered 500 years later by the French
mathematician, Blaise Pascal (1623 62). The Chinese mathematician, Chu Shih Chieh, depicted the
triangle and indicated its use in providing coefficients for the binomialexpansion of (a + b)n in his
1303 treatise The Precious Mirror of the Four Elements. Chinese mathematician, Chia Hsien (circa
1050) used the triangle to extract square and cube roots of numbers. In addition, after Chia Hsien
s discovery of the relationship between extracting roots and the binomial coefficients of the
triangle, work continued on this topic by several Chinese algebraists to solve higher than cubic
equations. Pascal s work on the triangle emanated from the popularity of gambling. The triangle
came to be known as Pascal s Triangle with Blaise Pascal s completion of Traité du triangle
arithmétique in 1654. Making use of the already known array of binomial coefficients, Blaise Pascal
developed many of the
Stamp Act Research Paper
The British Parliament passed The Stamp Act on March 22, 1765. It was a new tax that forced all
American Colonists to pay a tax on every piece of paper they used. The actual cost of the Stamp Act
was relatively small. What made the law so offensive to the colonists was not so much its immediate
cost but the standard it seemed to set (History.org). The total amount intended to be raised by the
new taxwas £60,000 per year, this is not even 20% of the total amount of £350,000 per year required
to maintain the troops (Stampacthistory.com). The colonists protested this act immediately. This law
ended up uniting the colonists against the British Government. It also led to the formation of the
Sons of Liberty. They organized boycotts and terrorized and tormented tax collectors.... Show more

With the Stamp Act, the colonists feared that if this law was allowed to pass with no resistance, that
there would be far worse taxations in the future. A lot of the colonists did not think that they could do
anything about the Law except grumble and buy the stamps, until the Patrick Henry Stamp Resolves
came along, they stated that Americans have the same rights as those in Britain, particularly the
right to be taxed by their own representatives. The law also led to the formation of the sons of liberty.
The Sons of Liberty, a well organized Patriot paramilitary political organization shrouded in secrecy,
was established to undermine British rule in colonial America and was influential in organizing and
carrying out the Boston Tea Party (Bostonteapartyship.com). As for the Intolerable Acts, many other
colonies supported Massachusetts in their protest. Many colonial leaders created a committee of
correspondence to discuss the consequences of the laws after seeing the threat to their charter and
rights. This eventually led to the creation of the First Continental Congress, who created the

Transgender Studies In Transgender Studies
In Susan Stryker s Transgender Studies, the author outlines the genesis of the field and how it
differs from other areas of research like Queer studies. Stryker asserts that, transgender studies is
concerned with anything that disrupts...the normative linkages we generally assume to exist
between the biological specificity of the...body, [and] the social roles and statuses that a particular
form of body is expected to occupy (pg. 3). At first glance, such a declaration seems to coincide
with the goal of Queer studies: to destabilize what are imagined to be static (sexual) identities.
However, Stryker notes that TransgenderStudies diverges from Queer Studies tendency to privilege
homosexual ways of difference over other forms of queer disruption. This focus on other means of
queer resistance is exemplified in Dean Spade s Mutilating Gender, which examines the restrictive
gendered scripts that are require of transgender individuals who wish to undergo sex reassignment
surgery (SRS). Unlike Stryker s work, Spade s analysis in Mutilating Gender, is not concerned with
defining Transgender Studies but in applying it through the lens of lived experience. Spade details
the incentivizing of hegemonic gender performances which are seen as more normative and
consequently deserving of access to SRS. As a result, Spade exemplifies transgender studies goal, as
outlined by Stryker, of disrupting the presumed connections between social roles and the sexually
differentiated body.
1984 And 1984
Overall, the majority of Cory Doctorow s included code in Little Brother is influenced by 1984
by George Orwell. The parallels are ever evident since the cover page of Little Brother. The Party
s, or government present in 1984, leader is referred to as Big Brother. Big Brother watches
everything, like how Marcus feels about Chavez High. On page 9 Marcus admits that he goes by
the username of W1n5ton, Winston in Leetspeak. Leetspeak is the replacement of letters with
numbers that resemble each other. The purpose of Leetspeak is the ability of communicating
without keywords being able to be detected through a search engine. The main character of 1984
is named Winston Smith, and Leetspeak can sound familiar to Newspeak; the Party s language
void of words relating to revolt. O Brien of 1984 is a superior of Winston, who is suspicious of
him being against the Party. In Little Brother, Marcus encounters the same type of relationship
with his teacher Ms. Galvez, though she never admits she is against the Department of Homeland
Security. If Principle Benson was in 1984 he would definitely be a Party member with Charles
being a Junior Spy, brainwashed into following Benson s ways. In 1984, making a wrong facial
expression at the wrong time could lead to arrest. Similar to Chavez High s security guards
searching and questioning students for making odd movements (131). Big Brother is able to keep
track of London by placing cameras practically everywhere, compared to Marcus finding out that
there were hidden cameras in half the classrooms at Chavez High School(85). Both majorly follow
the setting of living through a time before a major culture change in both liberal cities of San
Francisco and London which could be tied back to Marcus mother being English. Both
Technology That Supports The Hardware Side Of The Adjacent...
The intent of this chapter is to discuss the evolution with regards to technology that supports the
hardware side of the adjacent market. There is a huge positive correlation, which drives revenue
maximization for Microsoft Operating system and ecosystem partners. Before 2007 electronic
devices served customers to interact with the world, was primarily laptops, desktops for emails,
web browsing, chat and e commerce. Starting around early 2008, there was gradual shift towards
tablets and smartphones. Critical question to probe and understand is what elements of the
environment drove this structural shift. From a technology perspective tablets and smartphones
use low powered CPU s and RAM compare to their laptops and desktops brethren. They use both
Wi Fi and Cellular antenna to connect to World Wide Web. Cellular service provider s data speed,
which is the primary source for smart phone speed seen considerable improvement from 2G to 3G
and further to 4G3. 1G to 2G were the first improvement from analog to digital conversion. 2G to
3G gave significant improvement on Internet browsing speeds. Smart phone, handheld CPU s
speed was 500 620MHz in the year 2007 20093, which was good enough for a tablet and
smartphone to power its purposes, and these CPU were highly power efficient and leveraged
development in lithium ion batteries for all day use4. This change in the hardware and declining
costs on smartphone CPU s, all day battery and cellular providers 3G data speed
Phonograph Parlors
Commercialization of Records The Record Labels
In 1889 Phonograph Parlors began to open up, marking the debut of phonographs to the mass
market. The first phonograph parlor opened up in San Francisco May of 1889. Almost all
American cities had at least one by the mid 1890 s. These parlors would allow customers to sit
amongst a desk and speak through a tube to request a recorded title. The title would then play
through a cylinder phonograph from a room located below, allowing the customer to listen to it
through two ear horns at their private desk.
At the time the mass production of records was still in its infancy and was very primitive. One of
the first recording methods had live performers record their tracks onto a phonograph embodying up
to ten tubes leading to blank cylinders within other phonographs. Prior to this, each record had to be
individually produced. Nonetheless, even with this method artist had to re record their songs
multiple times.
In terms of audio fidelity, grampaphone discs were not superior to cylinder records. Up until the
early 1900 s both cylinder and disc recordings were available. The disc method, on the other hand,
did provide further manufacturing advantages as for discs could be efficiently stamped allowing
them to be easily mass produced.

the Edison Company was terminated in 1894 when Edison ceased providing them with blank

was a well kept secret. The materials Edison used to make his phonographs were not labeled and
therefore attempts by Columbia to steal secrets from Edison employees were not
Domestic Violence Shelter Research Paper
Domestic violence is more common than most people would like to believe. About one in every
four women will be victimized by a significant other at some point in their lives (Clevenger Roe
Sepowitz 2009). Many women are not able to get out of their situation on their own and need help
from others. Women in abusive relationships should consider going to a shelter for help to get out
of their unsafe situation. Shelters can assist not only with a safe place to live but it can also be a
stepping stone to rebuilding their lives. A shelter is there to provide a safe living environment and
multiple resources that someone would need to get themselves back on their feet. Some of the
resources are safety planning, legal assistance, mental health care and counseling,... Show more

When a victim first decides to seek help through a domestic violence shelter they may start by
reaching out through a crisis hotline service or by meeting with an advocate. Each employee and
volunteer is required to go through a training to help them learn to assist with a crisis situation. A
crisis hotline is available at all times for any one that feels they need someone to talk to about an
abusive situation (Bennett, Riger, Schewe, Howard, Wasco, 2004). A meeting with an advocate
is beneficial when a victim wants to sit down and have a serious talk about their options for
leaving their abuser and what may happen afterwards. The advocate will go with the victim to
legal and medical appointments as a support system. (Bennett et al, 2004). Bennett et al (2004)
reported that after following a group of women who were using an advocate services for a 10 week
period, 24 percent of those women were no longer being abused by the original abuser or by
another partner. This is a big step compared to the 10 percent of women who were longer being
abused without any help from an
Act And SAT Persuasive Essay
Colleges use the ACT and SAT tests to predict how students will perform in college and also to
decide whether they can get into the college and receive scholarships. There is controversy on
whether gpa and more essays is a better way to decide scholarships and admissions. I believe the
ACT and SAT are not the best way to predict how smart a student is or how well they will do in
collegeand they should not be used for admissions and scholarships. A few reasons come to mind
when making this decision. Before anything I will explain what the ACT and SATare, then why the
ACT and SAT are biased, why gpa is a better way to predict first year college performance, results
that colleges are getting from removing test scores from admissions, and why teaching students
how to test is taking away from their actual learning. The ACT And SAT are tests that colleges
across the world use for admissions, course placement, academic advising, scholarships, and loans.
As quoted in Chris Streetman s paper The Oxford Dictionary says, the SAT is known as the
Scholastic Aptitude Test and and it is a test of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is proven that the more times you take the test the more your score will go up, but on the other
hand it costs a good portion of money. Students with richer families will have better scores than
students with families with less income, because they will have more chances to make their score
better. According to Fairtest, ACT research shows that whites still outscore all other groups. These
are not the results that they should be getting (fairtest). The ACT is related to the mount of family
income meaning the students with the richer parents are the students with the higher scores
(Fairtest). This also goes back to students who have more family income will be able to pay for
ACT and SAT prep courses and pay for more chances to take the test. This is unfair for lower income
students that aren t given the same opportunities but are just as
