The Cardiorespiratory System
➢ Functions of Cardiorespiratory System
Functions:
1. It is responsible for the breathing process.
(Respiratory System)
2. It transports blood throughout the body
through the blood vessels.
( Circulatory System)
Respiration – a process where
organisms exchange gases with
the environment. It includes the
intake of oxygen and its delivery
to the cells of the different parts
of the body and the removal
and release of carbon dioxide.
Parts and Functions
of the Respiratory
System
- The nostrils are the opening
Nasal into the nasal passages
Cavity that are lined with hairs.
- The organ which serves as
the common passageway for
Pharynx
food and air.
- Also known as the voice box
- The vocal cords vibrate as air
Larynx passes through them and allows
us to produce sound and voice.
- Also known as the
Trachea
windpipe, made up of
muscles and elastic fibers.
- It is the distal end of the
trachea that branches out
Bronchi
into two
- The bronchi branches further
Bronchioles until the smallest tubes called
bronchioles formed.
- These are grapelike structures
at the end of the bronchioles.
Alveoli
- It is where the exchange of
gases occurs through the
Lungs aid of alveoli.
- It contracts or moves down
which causes the chest cavity
Diaphragm to expand, allowing air to
move into the lungs.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Circulatory System – is
responsible for the distribution
of blood and other materials
throughout the body.

HEART
The pumping organ of the
-
circulatory system.
-Divided into four chambers:
* Left and Right Atria
* Left and Right Ventricles
BLOOD
The liquid medium that is
-
flowing throughout the body.
-Components of the blood:
* Red blood cells
* White blood cells
* Platelets
* Plasma
BLOODVESSELS
-They are the vast networks
of small tubes that carry
blood throughout the
body.
-Types of blood vessel:
* Arteries
* Veins
* Capillaries
KEEPING THE
CARDIORESPIRATORY SYSTEM
HEALTHY
Our cardiorespiratory system
performs essential functions in
our body. When any of the
organs of cardiorespiratory
system is impaired, the overall
function of this body system
will be impaired as well.
The following statements are
healthful ways that promote
the proper functioning of the
cardiorespiratory system:
1. Do regular exercise.
- It improves blood
circulation throughout the
body and makes an
individual less susceptible
to heart attack.
2.Eat a well-balanced
diet.
-Avoid eating foods
which are high in
saturated fats.
3.Live in a clean environment.
-Staying in areas with large
amounts of pollutants in
water, land, and air is
considered detrimental to
one’s health.
4.Do not smoke cigarettes
and avoid going near
smokers.
-Smoking increases the risk
of stroke and coronary
heart disease.
