Class 10 Physics – Light Chapter Formulas

■ 1. Reflection of Light (Mirrors)

Mirror Formula:
1/f = 1/v - 1/u

Example:
Object distance u = -20 cm, focal length f = -10 cm (concave mirror)
1/f = 1/v - 1/u => -1/10 = 1/v + 1/20 => v = -6.67 cm

Magnification (Mirror):
m = -v/u

Example:
m = -(-6.67)/(-20) = 0.33 (virtual, erect, smaller image)

■ 2. Refraction of Light

Snell's Law / Refractive Index:

n = sin i / sin r

Example:
i = 30°, r = 19.5° => n = 0.5 / 0.334 ≈ 1.5

Speed and Refractive Index:

n=c/v

Example:
c = 3×10^8 m/s, n = 1.5 => v = 2×10^8 m/s

■ 3. Lenses (Refraction by Spherical Lenses)

Lens Formula:
1/f = 1/v - 1/u

Example:
u = -30 cm, f = +15 cm (convex lens)
1/f = 1/v - 1/u => 1/15 = 1/v + 1/30 => v = +30 cm

Magnification (Lens):
m = v/u

Example:
m = 30 / -30 = -1 (real, inverted, same size)

Power of Lens:
